The academy is free and aimed chiefly at children and young adults aged between 8 and 25 years old. It is the only education institution aimed at forming orchestral musicians in the state, offering students from low-income families the opportunity to become professionals in the area. Educational activities have the added benefit of attracting new listeners, playing an important part in democratizing education and culture in Rio Grande do Sul.
Classes are taught by members of the Porto Alegre Symphonic Orchestra, under the following modalities: violin, viola, cello, double bass, Western concert flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion.
Among the illustrious names of ex-students are the Ospa artistic director Evandro Matté, double bassist Walter Schinke, violinist Elsdor Ricardo Lenhart, bassoonist Adolfo Almeida Jr., soprano Carla Maffioletti, double bassist Milton Masciadri, maestro Antonio Borges-Cunha and double bassist Zé Natálio, a member of the band Papas da Língua.
